For Still Life Thursdays @sensoriyum today, we’re keen on Van Gogh’s “Potato Eaters”. Although most of us think of the rich blues and yellows that have become synonymous with his work, it is in this painting—according to many scholars—where Van Gogh first demonstrates his ability to go beyond objects and scene, and capture emotion, contrast, and social commentary. In this painting he richly conveys daily strife through hard work, and the sustenance—just one meagre dish of potatoes—that hopefully keeps the people represented alive another day. #food #stilllife #vangogh #art

Which is why we over here @sensoriyum are taking a moment to celebrate the sounds in and around every booth and counter: from the shake and malt machines, long iced tea spoons, ice hitting our glasses, plates dropping on the counter and the hum of chatter, we will forever love the let-your-hair-down-wear-the-sweat-pants comfort of being in a diner. Thursdays have become our STILL LIFE day @sensoriyum where we take a literal break from all of the activity of the week to let ourselves focus in on one thing for a moment and relish it for its own sake. Since it was National Cheese Lover’s Day on Tuesday and there’s never a bad time for cheese, we thought we’d settle on the beautiful painting by @mikegenostudio that he created for the Fall 2024 back cover of @saveurmag It’s a print that our editor @kristinlwolfe says she had to own and now happily hangs in her office. #cheese #saycheese #art

Last week we focused on carby crunch like chips, crackers and cookies, but today we hone in on the endlessly satisfying and guilt-free crunch of carrots. That’s what happens to me when I sauté onions. I’m instantly transported to her kitchen in Philadelphia when I was little. How about you? Does a particular ingredient or dish or experience in the kitchen transport you? Sense memory is a powerful thing.

Outside of my own kitchen, I get a similar sensation every time I visit one of my favorite places for pierogies and that is @veselkanyc in the East Village.

On Wednesdays at SENSORIYUM, we listen. We love a good sizzle, snap, chop or sound of a good sauté. The crackle of a good bread, the creamy ooze of sauce around a noodle, the whistling steam from a giant pot, and the hum of the espresso machine gets us going. Add to that the crisp crunch of a delicious chip, the crackle from fried chicken skin, or the edge of a perfect cookie, and we’re in an auditory oasis! On Wednesdays at SENSORIYUM, we listen. We love a good sizzle, snap, chop or sound of a good sauté. The crackle of a good bread, the creamy ooze of sauce around a noodle, the whistling steam from a giant pot, and the hum of the espresso machine gets us going. Add to that the crisp crunch of a delicious chip, the crackle from fried chicken skin, or the edge of a perfect cookie, and we’re in an auditory oasis! On Tuesdays at SENSORIYUM we use our noses to SMELL, sniff, whiff, and investigate the olfactory sense; from the intoxicating aroma of coffee or cinnamon, to some smells that may be up for debate like garlic, cilantro, curry or rosemary. Why is that the very smell of coffee can wake us up or the aroma of cinnamon brings on memories of the holidays? Sense memory is very powerful, in fact, the most powerful sense for triggering and evoking the past, and is often used in memory therapy. What does the aroma of coffee do for you? Sometimes a dish is so beautiful you might pause before eating and say, “Ohhhh, this is way too pretty to eat.” Many of us agree, however, that that thought usually just lasts a few seconds. But we do tend to eat with our eyes and utilize visual cues that often inform us about how something might taste. Is it colorful, arranged beautifully, shiny or textured? Our brains even tell us when something looks “sweet” or “sour” or “cold and hot”. All cues make a determination about our level of upcoming dining satisfaction. Thoughts? All of the meals or dishes featured were thoroughly enjoyed visually before being both savored and devoured with the utmost joy.
